Moving Checklist

A week-by-week system for moving home without losing your deposit, your sanity, or a week of your life looking for the box with the kettle in it.

Planning and Timeline

Start 8 weeks out minimum. Most moving disasters trace back to decisions made too late.

  • Set your move date and build a backwards task timeline from it
  • Decide on your moving method: professional movers, rental truck with friends, or portable storage containers
  • Set a total moving budget including movers, packing supplies, deposits, utility setup fees, and a 15% buffer
  • Check your lease for the required notice period and give notice in writing on the correct date
  • Measure every room in the new property and compare against your large furniture before moving day
  • Research the new neighborhood: nearest grocery store, pharmacy, GP, hospital, and public transport links
  • If moving with children, research school catchment areas and enrollment deadlines immediately
  • If moving with pets, update microchip registration, find a new vet, and check any breed or size restrictions in the new rental

Hiring Movers or Renting a Truck

The moving industry has more rogue operators than almost any other service sector. Verify before you book.

  • Book movers 6-8 weeks out for a summer or end-of-month move - 4 weeks out minimum at other times
  • Get written quotes from at least 3 companies based on an in-home or video survey, not a phone estimate
  • Verify each company is properly licensed and insured before shortlisting them
  • Ask specifically: will my move be done by employees or subcontractors?
  • Confirm in writing what is included: disassembly and reassembly, stair carry, long carry distance, fuel, packing materials
  • Get the full contract in writing: date, arrival window, total price, what happens if the job runs over, and cancellation policy
  • Confirm movers again 5-7 days before the move date
  • Reserve building elevator access at both properties if needed - contact building management at least 2 weeks out
  • Check if parking permits are needed for the moving truck at either address and arrange them in advance

Decluttering Before You Pack

You pay to move every item. Decluttering before packing saves money, time, and space in the new place.

  • Go room by room and sort everything into four categories: keep, sell, donate, discard
  • List valuable items for sale on Facebook Marketplace, eBay, or local apps - allow 2-3 weeks for sales to complete
  • Schedule a donation pickup with a charity at least 1 week before move day
  • Book a bulky waste collection or skip hire for items that cannot be donated or sold
  • Return items borrowed from others and retrieve your own things from friends and family
  • Dispose of hazardous items that movers will not transport: paint, chemicals, gas canisters, fire extinguishers
  • Clear and clean out the freezer at least 24 hours before move day

Packing System

A system that means you can find anything within 5 minutes of arriving at the new place.

  • Collect packing supplies before starting: boxes in small and medium sizes, packing tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, markers
  • Start packing 4-6 weeks out with non-essential areas: spare room, storage, seasonal items, books
  • Pack one room at a time and keep all boxes from that room together
  • Label every box on the top and on two sides: destination room, brief contents, FRAGILE if applicable
  • Number every box and keep a running master list of what is in each number
  • Pack plates vertically like vinyl records, not stacked flat - they survive transport far better
  • Fill every gap in every box with clothing, linens, or paper so nothing shifts during transport
  • Use wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes - they transfer directly from wardrobe to box to wardrobe with no folding
  • Prepare a first-night box or bag that travels with you in the car, not on the truck
  • Disassemble large furniture and store all screws and fittings in labelled zip-lock bags taped directly to the furniture piece
  • Photograph how complex electronics are cabled before disconnecting them

Utilities and Services

Plan for overlap, not gaps. Arriving to no electricity or internet on move-in day is avoidable.

  • Contact your electricity and gas suppliers to transfer or set up service at the new address - minimum 2 weeks notice
  • Book broadband installation at the new address the day you confirm your move date
  • Arrange contents and/or buildings insurance starting from move-in day, before the movers arrive
  • Cancel or transfer water service if billed separately at the old address
  • Transfer or cancel TV, cable, or satellite subscription
  • Cancel services tied to the old address that do not transfer: local gym membership, council tax direct debit at old property
  • Contact the council or local authority to update council tax registration at both old and new addresses on move-out and move-in dates
  • Set up mail redirection with Royal Mail or your national postal service - this is a safety net, not a substitute for updating your address

Address Change Master List

Work through this list in the first two weeks. Missing entries means important mail and documents going to someone else's home.

  • Update your bank accounts and credit cards
  • Update your driver's licence and vehicle registration - legally required within 30-90 days depending on your country
  • Update your employer HR department for payroll records, pension, and P60/W-2 tax documents
  • Notify HMRC (UK) or IRS (US) or your relevant tax authority
  • Update voter registration at your new address
  • Update all insurance policies: health, auto, life, and home
  • Update your GP, dentist, optician, and pharmacy - consider registering with a new local GP if you have moved far
  • Update Amazon, eBay, and other online shopping accounts with saved delivery addresses
  • Update all subscription deliveries: meal kits, magazines, subscription boxes, repeat prescriptions
  • Update your address on streaming services, Apple ID, Google account, and any account tied to billing
  • Notify your pension provider and any investment or savings accounts
  • Update LinkedIn and any professional directory listings
  • Tell family and close friends your new address

Old Home Closing

Your deposit depends on what you can prove. Document everything and leave nothing to memory.

  • Photograph every room, wall, floor, ceiling, and fixture on your final day - timestamp is essential
  • Cross-reference your photos against the move-in inventory report and note any discrepancies
  • Complete a move-out deep clean: inside all appliances, inside all cabinets, bathroom grout, windows inside and out
  • Patch nail holes in walls and touch up paint if required by your lease
  • Take meter readings for electricity, gas, and water on the final day and photograph the meters
  • Return all keys, fobs, parking permits, garage openers, and any other access items - get written confirmation
  • Do a final room-by-room sweep including every cupboard, loft, shed, garage, and outdoor area before leaving
  • Cancel your contents insurance at the old address from the day you move out

Moving Day

A sequence that keeps things moving, protects your belongings, and gives you legal protection if something goes wrong.

  • Confirm movers' arrival time and your own schedule the evening before
  • Protect floors in both properties with cardboard or floor protection film before anything is carried through
  • Do a final walkthrough of the old home before the truck leaves: every room, every cupboard, every outdoor space
  • Be present and available throughout the entire move - do not disappear when movers need decisions
  • Keep valuables, important documents, passports, laptops, and medication in your car, not on the truck
  • Arrange for children and pets to be elsewhere for the day - a safe space where they are not at risk from open doors and constant movement
  • Direct movers to the correct room for every box as it comes off the truck - this saves hours of moving things again later
  • Inspect every item as it is unloaded and note any damage on the mover's paperwork before signing off
  • Take photos of any damaged items before the movers leave
  • Tip movers if the job went well - cash, on the day

New Home First Steps

The first 24 hours in a new place. Small actions now prevent bigger problems later.

  • Photograph the entire new home before any of your belongings are moved in - timestamp essential
  • Document any existing damage in writing to your landlord or previous owner within 24 hours of moving in
  • Change or re-key all locks before your first night
  • Locate and test the main water shut-off valve, electricity fuse box/consumer unit, and gas shut-off
  • Test every smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector and replace batteries if in doubt
  • Check that all windows and external doors lock properly
  • Take meter readings for electricity, gas, and water on move-in day and photograph them
  • Check if any mail for the previous occupant is arriving and note their name to return it
  • Introduce yourself to the immediate neighbours within the first week

Unpacking and Settling In

Unpack in priority order so the home is liveable within 24 hours even if it takes weeks to fully settle.

  • Set up the bedroom first: you need good sleep to have the energy to do everything else
  • Set up the bathroom second: towels, toiletries, toilet paper
  • Set up the kitchen third before you start ordering delivery food every night
  • Arrange furniture in each room before unpacking its contents - moving a full bookcase is harder than an empty one
  • Unpack room by room rather than opening random boxes across the whole home
  • Break down and remove packing boxes as you unpack each room - they take over fast and make everything feel more chaotic
  • Test every appliance in the first week and report any issues to your landlord immediately in writing
  • Register with a local GP if you have moved to a new area - waiting lists exist and you want to be on one before you are unwell
  • Find your nearest pharmacy, urgent care, and A&E within the first few days
  • Complete the full address change list over the first two weeks while the habit is still fresh
  • Give yourself permission for the home to not be perfect immediately - set a realistic 4-week settling-in timeline
