4+ Weeks Before Launch - Audience and Hunter
The launch outcome is largely decided before launch day. Build the audience now.
- Choose your launch date - Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday PST for maximum traffic
- Identify and reach out to a well-known Product Hunt hunter to post on your behalf
- Create or optimize your Product Hunt profile - photo, bio, and at least 3 upvotes given to others
- Build or grow your email list - aim for at least 300 subscribers who are your target user
- Join the Ship waitlist feature on Product Hunt to collect 'notify me' subscribers directly on PH
- Identify 50-100 people in your network (customers, friends who are your users, community members) who will upvote on launch day
- Research the 5 most successful Product Hunt launches in your category in the last 12 months
2 Weeks Before Launch - Asset Creation
Prepare every visual and copy asset so launch day is execution, not creation.
- Create your Product Hunt thumbnail logo - 240x240px PNG with transparent background
- Write 5-10 tagline candidates using the rule: under 60 characters, no buzzwords, concrete outcome
- Prepare the product gallery: 3-5 screenshots (1270x760px) plus an optional animated GIF
- Create an optional 60-90 second launch video (YouTube or Vimeo link) showing the core flow
- Write the full product description (PH allows 260 characters in the short description field)
- Draft your maker's first comment (400-600 words) sharing the behind-the-scenes story
- Prepare a special Product Hunt landing page or coupon code for PH visitors (20-30% off for 72 hours)
1 Week Before Launch - Warm-Up
Prime your audience so launch day feels like a coordinated release, not a cold start.
- Send a 'launching next week' email to your entire list with the date and a single ask: 'Will you upvote us?'
- Post a teaser on Twitter/X and LinkedIn: 'We're launching on Product Hunt on [date]. Would love your support.'
- Message your top 30 personal contacts individually (not a group message) to ask for day-of support
- Post in 3-5 communities where your users hang out, sharing what you have been building (without asking for upvotes directly)
- Do a full dry-run of the PH submission form using the preview feature to catch any formatting issues
- Prepare and schedule your day-of social media posts in a tool like Buffer or Hypefury
Day Before Launch - Final Prep
Do everything possible tonight so launch day is pure engagement.
- Submit the PH post at 23:45 PST the night before - it will go live at 00:01 PST
- Double-check all gallery images display correctly in the PH preview
- Verify the product URL works and the PH-specific landing page or coupon code is live
- Prepare your 'maker comment' in a text file ready to paste as your very first comment at 00:01 PST
- Send a final reminder to your personal network: 'Tomorrow at [time your timezone] - here is the link' with a direct URL to your PH post
- Get 8 hours of sleep - launch day requires sustained attention for 16+ hours
Launch Day - First 4 Hours (00:01-04:00 PST)
The first 4 hours set the algorithmic trajectory for the entire day.
- Post your maker comment at exactly 00:01 PST
- Send the launch email to your full list at 00:05 PST with a direct link to the PH post
- Post the launch announcement on Twitter/X and LinkedIn with a direct PH link
- Send direct messages to your pre-committed supporters with the live PH link
- Respond to every PH comment within 15 minutes during the first 4 hours
- Monitor your rank on the PH homepage and note your position at 01:00, 02:00, and 04:00 PST
Launch Day - Main Push (08:00-14:00 PST)
The US East Coast wakes up at 08:00 PST. This is your highest-traffic window.
- Post a mid-morning update on Twitter/X with early traction ('We hit #3 on @ProductHunt this morning!')
- Post in relevant communities on Reddit, Hacker News, and niche forums during this window
- Share in 3-5 Slack or Discord communities where you are an active member
- Ask 3-5 newsletter authors you know if they can mention your launch in their next send
- Post a LinkedIn article or update with the story behind building the product
- Check your site's error monitoring and server load - PH traffic spikes can be 10-50x your normal baseline
Launch Day - Evening Push (17:00-23:59 PST)
The final ranking is locked at midnight PST. Stay engaged through the evening.
- Post an evening update with the day's best comment or user feedback
- Send a 'last few hours' reminder email to the portion of your list who opened the morning email but did not click
- Thank your most active supporters publicly on Twitter/X and in the PH comment thread
- Respond to all remaining PH comments before midnight PST
- Screenshot your final rank at 23:55 PST before the day resets
Converting PH Traffic to Signups
A top-5 finish drives 500-2,000 website visitors. Convert them.
- Add a Product Hunt-specific banner or badge to your landing page on launch day ('Featured on Product Hunt')
- Offer a launch-day exclusive deal with a visible countdown timer (20-30% off, expires in 72 hours)
- A/B test your landing page CTA button text: 'Start free' typically outperforms 'Sign up' or 'Get started'
- For every signup in the first 48 hours, send a personal welcome email from your own email address (not a no-reply address)
- Add a live chat widget (Crisp free tier) to catch visitors with questions during peak traffic
- Track PH-attributed signups, conversions, and revenue separately using UTM parameters and a dedicated segment in your analytics
Cross-Posting Strategy
Maximize reach by posting natively on each platform - never just drop a PH link.
- Twitter/X: post a 3-tweet thread - problem, solution, and the PH link - not just a single promotional tweet
- LinkedIn: write a personal story post (300-500 words) about why you built this, not a product announcement
- Hacker News Show HN: title must follow the format 'Show HN: [Product Name] - [what it does in plain English]'
- Reddit: find 2-3 niche subreddits where your target user hangs out and post a genuine 'built this' story
- Reach out to 5 newsletters in your niche and offer to write a free guest post or sponsor a single issue
- If you have an Indie Hackers or Makerlog presence, post your launch milestone there
Handling Comments and Community
Your engagement quality in the PH thread directly affects ranking and conversion.
- Acknowledge every critical comment constructively - never get defensive
- Ask a genuine question in your maker comment to invite engagement: 'What feature would make this a must-have for you?'
- Respond to every question with specific, useful information - not marketing copy
- DM the 5 most thoughtful commenters to invite them into a beta feedback group or Discord
- Add a 'What we are building next' section to your maker comment or post an update comment 6 hours into launch day
Post-Launch Follow-Up
The PH launch is a starting gun, not a finish line.
- Post a 'Day 1 results' update on Twitter/X, LinkedIn, and Indie Hackers within 24 hours of launch
- Send a thank-you email to everyone who supported the launch within 48 hours
- Analyze your launch traffic: which channel drove the most signups, not just the most clicks
- Interview 5 people who signed up on launch day to understand what made them convert
- Apply to be featured in PH's weekly and monthly newsletters if you finished in the top 5
- Plan your 'Golden Kitty' category award campaign if your launch was strong (awards announced annually in December)
- Document everything that worked and did not work in a post-mortem document for future launches or pivots
